Will widescreen become the standard? Many existing vessels are outfitted with a radar displays of 19 or 23 inch, which is the mandatory size. As most ship owners might already know, the worldwide LCD market is switching to widescreens. This results in lower prices for widescreen panels and also, the demand for 23” LCD displays will decrease rapidly and possibly the production of the current 23 inch displays will stop.
What does this mean for you? If you are planning to buy a new radar, ECDIS or Conning, it is wise to consider widescreen displays. This will ensure future service and maintenance and will make you profit from the benefits of widescreens.
Benefits of wide screens: - A widescreen display offers more space to show information on. - Depending on choice of radar producer, the extra display space can be used for larger radar image, more information, improved screen lay-out etc. - Widescreens will be financial attractive compared to the current standards.
Raytheon Anschutz for example has changed the round radar image to a squire image to increase radar visibility. Alewijnse supplies the full Raytheon Anschutz Radar, Ecdis & conning systems with 26”widescreens, 19” and 23”.

SeaScout radar for anti-collision Recently, a new radar function was introduced: the SeaScout™. This unique feature is providing anti-collision assistance. For example all Raytheon Anschütz NSC radars include SeaScout™, in addition to the new functionalities. The function evaluates the current traffic situation and shows the dangerous “no go areas”. What does this mean for you? As investigated by all major authorities, most collisions are the result of human failure. SeaScout® supports the navigator finding a save way and avoiding situations of possible collision.
What are the benefits? - The new function analyzes the movement of the plotted objects and determines in which areas the danger causes by a possible crash is exceptional high. - These areas are displayed as a hatched field. - If the navigator avoids these so-called “NO GO areas”, most probably a safe route is chosen. - SeaScout® shows true zones (in relation to other true objects e.g. chart underlay, buoys, true marks, traffic separation zones, nav lines).
